I am always amazed at how just showing an item from nature to a participant can trigger a memory and lead to a nice interaction. A vase of flowers can lead to a discussion of a garden from growing up; shells serve as a reminder of childhoods spent at the beach; a program animal reminds someone of their own pets. It is always interesting to see where and how these discussions evolve – it’s one of my favorite parts of volunteering.
