Touch, Wonder, Investigate, Grow (TWIG)

Accessible Nature Moments by The Nature Connection

In an effort to share our unique, therapeutic methodology (especially in these times of physical/social distancing), The Nature Connection has created TWIG: a collection of activities that make nature available to people with unique abilities or situations that limit their access to the outdoors. The goal of TWIG is to share our unique, therapeutic methodology (especially in these times of physical/social distancing) with healthcare & social work professionals, educators, family, and friends to provide them the tools to engage  those they love and care for with nature.

TWIG goes beyond typical outdoor education activities by putting an emphasis on making nature accessible, engaging, sensory, and universally enjoyable. TWIG activities are created to be accessible to individuals of all ability levels, including those with medical complications, social-emotional challenges, genetic predispositions, and disabilities by providing:

  • A variety of engagement methods, from passive to interactive activities centered around a single nature topic
  • Focused and simple activities to connect with nature, each other, and ourselves
  • Physical and cognitive engagement that meets participants where they are
  • The many physical, mental, and emotional benefits of interacting with nature!

With TWIG activities you can explore nature with anyone, anywhere – including indoors!

Touch - Get hands-on with nature regardless of your ability to go outside! TWIG provides activities that utilize common materials and alternative ways to engage the senses and explore the same ideas/topics/natural objects to fit everyone’s preferences.
Wonder – Observe, think, and connect. TWIG provides broad questions and conversation prompts that are open ended, allowing participants to get curious and offer their thoughts/opinions without being restricted to right or wrong answers.
Investigate – Explore nature through the senses, meet participants where they are, and enjoy the journey as you learn about nature, yourself, and each other. TWIG provides the tools and guidance for simple and focused exploration of a natural topic or material.
Grow – Exposure to new ideas and experiences through mindful practice. TWIG provides topics in nature related to the human experience such as: interpersonal relationships, community building, and self-awareness. cognitive development, sense of self, and social-emotional learning.
