Nature for Day Habilitation & Group Homes
Empowering adults with disabilities through connection, exploration, and joy in nature.
The Nature Connection brings therapeutic nature programs directly to day habilitation centers and group homes, creating accessible, engaging, and meaningful experiences for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Our programs are designed to support choice, autonomy, and social connection — while providing a safe space to explore nature, connect with animals, and experience calm and joy.

How We Serve
Our sessions are designed to be accessible, engaging, and joyful for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We work in small group settings, closely partnering with caregivers and staff to support individualized experiences that build connection, confidence, and calm.
Imagine the wonder — and delight — of tracing the pattern on a turtle’s shell, touching the textured points of a deer antler, or feeling the tickle of a hermit crab as it pulls itself across your palm. These sensory-rich moments spark genuine excitement and have become a favorite activity — often a highlight of each resident’s month.
Because many participants experience visual, speech, or physical impairments, we emphasize one-on-one interactions where participants and volunteers can get totally in the moment. These experiences often serve as powerful motivators for occupational therapy, speech improvement, and greater daily engagement. As one clinical director shared, simply reaching out to pet a rabbit can support increased movement, communication, and independence.
Each session may include:
-
Interactive animal visits
-
Sensory exploration with natural materials
-
Nature-inspired art or creative projects
-
Gentle movement, mindfulness, or seasonal rituals
Whether someone is eager to engage or prefers to observe quietly, our team meets them where they are — bringing nature in a way that supports choice, expression, and meaningful connection.

A Therapeutic Approach
Our facilitators are trained in trauma-informed care and person-centered engagement with individuals across a wide range of abilities. We prioritize respect, emotional safety, and strengths-based interaction in every session — helping participants feel seen, successful, and connected.
Our programs support:
-
Emotional regulation and mood
-
Social interaction and relationship-building
-
Sensory integration and engagement
-
Confidence, expression, and choice
We work closely with staff to adapt programs as needed — including visual supports, alternate pacing, and nonverbal or AAC-based participation.
