Nature Programs for Shelters & Transitional Housing
Bringing grounding, dignity, and moments of peace to individuals and families in transition.

The Nature Connection offers trauma-informed nature programs for individuals and families experiencing housing instability, including those in emergency shelters, domestic violence shelters, family shelters, and transitional housing programs.
In the midst of uncertainty, nature offers steadiness — a way to reconnect with the senses, restore a sense of self, and experience moments of calm, curiosity, and control.
How We Serve
Our programs are carefully designed to meet people where they are — emotionally, physically, and situationally. Whether someone is navigating trauma, temporary housing, or long-term recovery, our team brings nature-based experiences that are gentle, nonjudgmental, and choice-based.
Imagine the grounding comfort of holding a warm rabbit, listening to the soft swish of grasses, or carefully arranging fall leaves into a mandala. These small, sensory moments offer more than a break — they provide a sense of control, presence, and even joy.
Each session may include:
-
Animal interactions that offer connection and calm
-
Nature-based activities that encourage creative expression and reflection
-
Seasonal themes tied to resilience, change, and renewal
-
One-on-one engagement that prioritizes emotional safety and personal choice
Our programs are designed for all ages and family structures. Whether working with individuals, small family groups, or children and adults separately, we adapt each visit to meet the needs and rhythms of the community.
A Therapeutic Approach
Our facilitators are trained in trauma-informed care and bring deep respect to every session. We emphasize predictability, nonverbal options for engagement, and environments where no one is pressured to perform or participate in a certain way.
Programs are structured to support:
-
Nervous system regulation and emotional grounding
-
A sense of agency and self-expression
-
Relationship-building and gentle social interaction
-
Moments of wonder, joy, and relief amid instability
We understand that consistency and flexibility are equally important in shelter settings, and we’re committed to working alongside staff to provide accessible, low-barrier experiences for all.
